Learning Assistant Programs
A sample of LA programs from across the country who have informative websites.
(There are hundreds of LA programs around the world!)

Where it all began
"The Learning Assistant (LA) model was originally conceived and developed at CU Boulder, and now more than 120 other colleges
and universities around the world are implementing their own LA Programs!"
A program that supports students in very large classes with remarkable results
"Peer learning support helps every voice be heard.
Oregon State University and the College of Science have emerged as pioneers in shaping a new era of improved science teaching, replacing the traditional lecture format with active learning strategies to maximize student engagement and learning in STEM courses."

Teaching future teachers
"Here at BU, the goal of our program is to improve student learning, both that of the LAs themselves, and of the students who are taking the courses with LAs. We also aim to prepare undergraduate students for careers in education, or careers involving educational best practices.
Our philosophy is “Learn to teach; teach to learn.” By learning how to teach, LAs don’t simply master pedagogical skills; they become lifelong learners."
Transforming all active learning classes
"The program provides a unique learning experience for undergraduates enrolled in various courses by transforming current classes and lectures into an active learning setting. The UH Mānoa’s LA Program initally started working with STEM (e.g. physics, biology, chemistry, math, etc.) courses and has now been expanded to include any course that is looking to build an active learning enviornment. LAs offer a vital level of support in difficult and/or big lecture courses. They serve a critical role by facilitating active learning and collaborative instruction in large lectures, discussions and labs."
